Indonesia is a megadiverse country, ranking second after Brazil in terms of biodiversity. However, it’s unfortunate that we have relatively few biologists compared to more developed nations. Therefore, Indonesia must cultivate high-quality, dedicated biologists. Additionally, the monotonous campus routine often drives them to seek fresh air outside, away from campus politics, academic challenges, and other pollutants. These escapes ultimately lead to a thirst for knowledge, which can only be quenched through enlightenment in nature.
To achieve this, the idea emerged among several biology education students (still in the MIPA Faculty of Tarbiyah program) to establish an official platform for student activities related to scientific research and nature appreciation. This organization was named BIOLASKA, an acronym for “Biologi Pecinta Alam Sunan Kalijaga.”
Biolaska was officially founded on June 19, 2004, with the approval of its bylaws (AD/ART) and the formation of its executive board. Key figures involved in its inception included Mufid Ahsan Rofiqi, S.Pd, Zaki Alfauri, S.Pd.I, Widada, S.Pd.I, Imam Mustaqim S.Pd.I, and Umdah Mustarohah, S.Pd.I. The organization operates based on the Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education) and Pancasila principles. Biolaska’s organizational motto is “Exploratum in de Universum,” which translates to “Exploration of the Universe.”
The term of office for Biolaska’s leadership is two years, with member recruitment occurring every two years.
Biolaska’s specific goal is to preserve nature in alignment with the knowledge acquired through its studies. The organization aims to produce students who not only master theoretical concepts in the classroom and excel in laboratories but also understand natural phenomena, document biodiversity, and apply biological knowledge in the wild. By focusing on practical applications, Biolaska strives to shape professional biologists and conservation advocates.
Membership criteria are outlined in the AD/ART, allowing students majoring in Biology and Biology Education at the Faculty of Science and Technology (Saintek) of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta to voluntarily register as Biolaska members. Essential requirements include physical and mental health, as well as successful completion of basic education (DIKSAR) within specified timeframes. Biolaska members have the right to participate in activities according to established guidelines and are obligated to uphold the organization’s reputation.
Ultimately, Biolaska aims for its members to enhance their quality of membership and develop their scientific and nature appreciation skills. Additionally, fostering collaboration and communication with other institutions, such as research-based nature enthusiasts, NGOs, and other student organizations, is encouraged.
