Enhancing Academic Perspectives: International Experts Deliver Lectures on Sustainable Agriculture to Biology Program

Biology Study Program, Faculty of Science and Technology successfully hosted a Guest Lecture Biology 2025 event on Monday, 19th May 2025, at the Language Development Center Hall of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, featuring two distinguished speakers from Malaysia: Assoc. Prof. Noor Baity Binti Saidi from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), and Dr. Nurul Shamsinah Mohd Suhaimi from the Institute of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya. The event brought fresh insights into plant pathology and sustainable agriculture, inspiring students to engage with current global challenges in biology.

Dr. Ika Nugraheni Ari Martiwi, Head of the Biology Study Program, officially opened the event. In her welcome speech, Dr. Ika expressed her deep appreciation to both speakers for accepting the department’s invitation to share their knowledge. She remarked, “We are truly honored to welcome distinguished experts from Malaysia. The topics presented are highly relevant to our field, and we hope our students gain valuable knowledge and inspiration from today’s lectures.” She also emphasized that the purpose of inviting international speakers is to broaden students’ academic horizons, expose them to global research perspectives, and strengthen their scientific communication skills through cross-cultural academic engagement.

Assoc. Prof. Noor Baity Binti Saidi delivered a lecture titled “Biological Management of Fusarium Wilt in Bananas and the Challenges”, where she highlighted the impact of Fusarium oxysporum on banana plantations and discussed effective biological control measures, including the use of resistant varieties and microbial antagonists. Meanwhile, Dr. Nurul Shamsinah Mohd Suhaimi followed with her session, “Harnessing Microbial Agents to Enhance Sustainable Agricultural Productivity”, focusing on the role of beneficial microbes in improving soil health, boosting crop yield, and reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The event was moderated by Lela Susilawati, Ph.D., who guided the lecture sessions and facilitated an engaging discussion with participants.

Students from various academic years attended the event and participated actively in the Q&A session. They enthusiastically asked insightful questions, reflecting their strong interest in the topics and appreciation for the opportunity to interact with experienced international researchers. This guest lecture series underscores the Biology Study Program's commitment to academic excellence, international collaboration, and preparing students to contribute meaningfully to global scientific challenges.
