Bina Desa 2025: Biology Study Program Strengthens Community Empowerment Through Science and Environmental Education

The Biology Study Program of the Faculty of Science and Technology, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, in collaboration with the Biology Student Association of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, successfully implemented the 2025 Village Development program on August 28–29, 2025 at the Al-Hikmah Islamic Boarding School, Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, involving 131 students from junior high, vocational, and Islamic high school levels. This annual initiative strengthens scientific literacy, environmental awareness, and community engagement, with both lecturers and students from the Biology Study Program actively involved throughout the event. The opening ceremony, attended by Biology program lecturers and representatives of the pesantren, marked the beginning of two days filled with meaningful and collaborative learning experiences.

Throughout the first day, participants took part in integrated environmental education activities through the “Polisi Sampah” and “Sekolah Sampah” sessions, led directly by Biology lecturers and assisted by student volunteers. These sessions introduced concepts of waste sorting, composting, eco-enzyme production, and safe handling of inorganic and hazardous waste. At the same time, the Biotilik activity allowed santri to explore river biodiversity and understand ecological indicators of environmental health, while a parallel workshop on maggot cultivation taught students how Black Soldier Fly larvae can support sustainable organic waste management.

The second day continued with activities that combined character education and practical environmental skills. Santri worked together in the Kebun Santri, reinforcing responsibility and environmental stewardship under the guidance of student facilitators. They also received interactive sessions on bullying prevention, seniority awareness, and adolescent health, followed by a hands-on workshop on producing eco-friendly leaf briquettes. Outdoor Fit Games and group activities added an element of teamwork, communication, and confidence-building for all participants.

The success of Bina Desa 2025 reflects the strong commitment of the Biology Study Program to empowering communities through science, innovation, and partnership. With active involvement from both lecturers and students, the program demonstrates how academic knowledge can be translated into practical benefits for society. UIN Sunan Kalijaga extends its appreciation to Pondok Pesantren Al-Hikmah and all volunteers whose dedication ensured the success and impact of this year’s event.
