Description This course provides an overview of how microbes (for example bacteria, viruses and yeast) are manipulated and used to solve practical problems through biotechnology. Topics covered include the basics of life, microbial ecology and metabolism, methods used in microbial technology (from fermentation methods to genetic engineering), use of microbes in industry, microbes in drug development, interactions between microbes, plants and animals, microbes in the food sector, gut microbiota, and metagenomics. This subject requires a background in understanding microbiology, chemistry and biochemistry, as well as cell structure and function.
