BIOLASKA UIN Sunan Kalijaga Teams Secure 2nd and 3rd Place in the National Dragonfly Jamboree III
The third National Dragonfly Jamboree (Jamboree Capung Indonesia III) took place in 2019 with the theme “Dragonflies in Cultural and Environmental Conservation.” The event aimed to highlight the connection between dragonflies and nature. Held over three days from July 26 to 28, 2019, the jamboree was hosted by Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Banyuwangi and the Banyuwangi Watershed Management Agency (DAS Kawasan Banyuwangi). The opening ceremony was conducted at the UNTAG Banyuwangi Auditorium, officiated by the UNTAG Banyuwangi Rector. The event attracted more than 60 participants, not only from Banyuwangi but also from outside Java, making it a national-scale gathering.
This was the third Dragonfly Jamboree held in the Banyuwangi region. The previous Jamboree (Jamboree Capung Indonesia II) took place in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The organizing committee for Jamboree Capung Indonesia II consisted of students from UIN Sunan Kalijaga, specifically the BIOLASKA student association, in collaboration with the Water Forum Kalijaga, IDS, Capung Indonesia, PPBJ, Kutilang Indonesia, and Kopi Sulingan.
The BIOLASKA UIN Sunan Kalijaga delegation comprised six individuals organized into two teams. Some of the participating delegates in Jamboree Capung Indonesia III included Raafi Nur Ali, Febriyan Eka Tama, Bela Prapitasari, Risti Zahroh, Aulya Nidaur Rahmah, and Alfin Galih Wijayanto (an alumnus).
The jamboree kicked off with a national seminar attended by students, university students, and the general public. The first speaker, Drs. Hasan Basri, M. Pd (Vice Chairman of the Blambangan Art Council and Chairman of the Osing Indigenous Community Institution), discussed “The Role of Dragonflies in Banyuwangi’s Culture.” The second speaker, Prigi Arisandi, S. Si, M.Si (Executive Director of ECOTON), explored “Dragonflies and Environmental Change.” The final speaker, Dr. Suputa from UGM (Lecturer in Pest and Plant Science at Gadjah Mada University, and a member of the Entomological Society of Indonesia/PEI), presented on “Dragonflies and Agriculture.” The event also featured the launch of the book “UNTRING Dragonflies of Banyuwangi.”
The subsequent activities included the Dragonfly Race competition, which consisted of three events: photography, scientific paper competition (LKTI), and the Dragonfly Race itself.
In the Dragonfly Race, BIOLASKA UIN Sunan Kalijaga teams outperformed other participants, securing 2nd and 3rd place. The 2nd place team, known as the “Most Exciting Team,” included Raafi Nur Ali (Biological Education, Class of '15), Febriyan Eka Tama (Biology, Class of '16), and Bela Prapitasari (Biology, Class of '17). The 3rd place team included Alfin Galih Wijayanto (Biology, Class of '11), Aulya Nidaur Rahmah (Biology, Class of '17), and Risti Zahroh (Biology, Class of '17). These champions received certificates of appreciation, cash prizes, and other rewards.
The Dragonfly Race involved participants recording encounters with dragonfly species and their quantities at predetermined locations. Participants documented their observations on tally sheets provided by the organizers. Additionally, each group created 10 dragonfly sketches along with morphological descriptions. The final assessment for the Dragonfly Race included a quiz covering dragonfly identification, social and cultural aspects, and general knowledge. The total score was based on the number of dragonfly species encountered, including a key species (known only to the organizers), the sketches, and the quiz.
