On February 25, 2023, at the Al-Mumtaz Islamic boarding school in Beji, Patuk, Gunungkidul, the Community Service Program (PKM) organized by the Biology Department of UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta took place. This PKM program focused on Early Screening and Education about color blindness among the students of Al-Mumtaz Islamic boarding school. Recognizing the significance of providing information about color blindness to students, teachers, and families, the Biology Department deemed it essential to conduct this awareness and color blindness testing program. The initiative is part of the university’s commitment to community service, one of the pillars of higher education.

The community service activities were attended by Biology faculty members and students. In her opening remarks, the Head of the Biology Department, Najda Rifqiyati, M.Si., emphasized the importance of early awareness regarding color blindness, which can guide future career choices. Additionally, she shared information about the Biology Department at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, which received enthusiastic responses from the students of Al-Mumtaz Islamic boarding school. Coordinated by Jumailatus Solihah, M.Si., the Biology faculty members served as speakers during the event. They discussed color blindness, its genetic basis, and how it is likely present in individuals. Furthermore, the Biology faculty collaborated with students to conduct initial color blindness screening for approximately 273 students at Al-Mumtaz Islamic boarding school, including both male and female students in the junior high and high school levels (MTs and MA). The screening utilized the Ishihara test, where respondents were asked to identify numbers on Ishihara plates. The results of this reading helped identify potential color blindness indicators.

Through this initiative, the Biology Department at UIN Sunan Kalijaga aims to make a tangible impact on the well-being and progress of the community. By enhancing understanding of health-related conditions, this program benefits community members.
