Biology Study Program Hosts Global Guest Lecture on Biochar–Microbe Interactions by Inviting Expert from Can Tho University, Vietnam
The Biology Study Program, Faculty of Science and Technology, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, successfully held a Global Guest Lecture featuring Assoc. Prof. Thi Kim Phuong Nguyen, PhD, from the Faculty of Soil Science, College of Agriculture, Can Tho University, Vietnam. Conducted virtually on Thursday, 6 November 2025, the event attracted students, lecturers, and researchers with a keen interest in soil science, microbial ecology, and sustainable agricultural practices.
In her presentation titled “Biochar-Microbe Interactions: Enhancing Soil Health through Microbial Physiology,” Assoc. Prof. Nguyen examined the vital role of microbial activity in enhancing soil fertility. She explained how soil microorganisms contribute to nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition, and the release of essential nutrients that support plant growth. By integrating biochar, an organic soil amendment, microbial populations can become more active and efficient, creating a healthier and more productive soil ecosystem. Drawing on her research at Can Tho University, she highlighted how biochar enhances microbial habitats and improves their physiological functions, providing long-term benefits for agricultural soils in tropical regions.
An engaging discussion followed the lecture, allowing participants to dig deeper into practical applications of biochar in Indonesian soils, its potential for boosting crop productivity, and opportunities for collaborative research between UIN Sunan Kalijaga and Can Tho University. The interaction fostered meaningful academic dialogue and emphasized the importance of scientific collaboration in addressing global agricultural challenges. By inviting an international expert from Can Tho University, Vietnam, the Biology Study Program continues to expand its global academic network and enhance the quality of scientific exposure for its students and faculty.
