Biosafety Training For Biology Program: Lab Practicum, Who’s Afraid?

For biology students, practical work in laboratories or the field is an integral part of their academic experience. Especially under the 2016 curriculum, practical work is closely linked to theoretical coursework. Students not only attend theory classes but are also required to participate in relevant lab or field practicums. The integration of theory and practical work aims to equip students with both a solid understanding of biological concepts and practical skills for working in biology labs or field settings.

During practical work, students must exercise caution, as they often handle hazardous materials and chemicals that require precision. To ensure that biology students are prepared to work safely and comfortably in labs or field environments, the Biology Program provides Biosafety Training for Laboratory Work. This training is conducted annually and is specifically designed for second-semester students who are about to engage in lab practicums. In the current year, the Biosafety Training in the Biology Laboratory took place on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 12-13, 2019, at the Integrated Laboratory of the Faculty of Science and Technology, UIN Sunan Kalijaga. Fifty-three second-semester Biology Program students (class of 2019) participated in the training.

The training sessions were led by Ethik Susiawati Purnowo, S.Si., Sutriyono, S.Si., and Dony Eko Saputro, S.Pd.I. They covered topics related to Health and Occupational Safety (K3) in the Biology Laboratory. The training also included practical exercises and familiarization with lab spaces and equipment. Unlike previous years, this year’s Biosafety Training concluded with a Performance Test on Microscope Usage for participants. Students who passed the final test received a training certificate as a prerequisite for their munaqosyah registration. So, who’s afraid of lab practicums in Biology?
