Explore the Potential Behind Mount Merapi and the Routine of WCF Yogyakarta
The Wildlife Conservation Forum (WCF) Yogyakarta recently held its monthly meeting. This time, it coincided with the agenda of Mount Merapi National Park (TNGM), which hosted the April 2019 edition. The event took place on April 13, 2019, at Joglo-semar Wisata Kali Kuning from 09:00 to 13:00 WIB.
WCF is a community forum consisting of academics, NGOs, observers, practitioners, and conservation enthusiasts. Their collective goal is to preserve wildlife in its natural habitat. Notably, BIOLASKA and Biology students from UIN SUKA actively participate in this forum.
“The meetings like this are routines that need consistent maintenance, serving as a platform to strengthen camaraderie among members. With diverse participants from various backgrounds, regular face-to-face interactions are essential,” said Dr. M. Imron, S.Hut, M.Sc., the chairman of WCF.
Previous meetings were held at various locations, including WRC Kulon Progo, Atmajaya Yogyakarta, and BIOLASKA UIN SUKA. The UIN SUKA event coincided with the exposition of BIOLASKA’s expedition results on Bawean Island.
The meeting was officially opened by the head of TNGM, who expressed appreciation for WCF’s efforts. He emphasized the importance of conserving wildlife within the TNGM area. “Conservation efforts are crucial, especially within protected areas like the National Park. Many endangered species inhabit TNGM, including the Javan Hawk-Eagle, Leopard, and Javan Langur,” he stated.
During the meeting, two main topics were discussed by TNGM. The first was “Towards 10 Years: Merapi Eruption” presented by Dr. Agus Dwi Santoso (Head of the Merapi Volcano section at BPPTKG). The second topic focused on “Conservation and Observation of Key Species in TNGM: Javan Hawk-Eagle,” presented by Irwan Atmoko (PEH TNGM).
In the final session, WCF held a discussion led by Dr. M. Imron, S.Hut, M.Sc., covering plans for the next three months, host selection, and upcoming events in Yogyakarta. These events include the International Primatology Congress, a meeting of Owl enthusiasts, and activities organized by the Wildlife Study Group at UGM. The session concluded with announcements about the WCF logo design competition, web design, and capacity-building plans for WCF members.
