Learning Animal Anatomy with Santri (Islamic boarding school students) at Pondok Pesantren Al Hikmah, Gunung Kidul
One of the aspects of the university’s tri dharma (three main duties) is community service. To fulfill this, the Biology Study Program (PS Biologi) organized a community service activity in collaboration with Biology students and Pondok Pesantren (Islamic boarding school). The purpose of this activity was to introduce the preparation of preserved specimens and fungal blocks from the Biology Study Program to students and science teachers at Pondok Pesantren Al-Hikmah in Wonosari, Gunung Kidul. The event began with an opening speech by the Head of the Biology Department, followed by a session on wet and dry specimen preparation presented by speakers Ms. Najda Rifqiyati, M.Si., and Mr. Ariq Nazar, S.Si., moderated by Ms. Faradita R., S.Si. After the second session, there was a break. The subsequent sessions involved hands-on practice in creating wet or fresh specimens and preserved specimens, followed by a meal break (ishoma). The final session focused on creating fungal blocks, led by the students. The event was successful, as evidenced by the enthusiastic participation of the students who were eager to perform dissections and observe the prepared specimens. The wet specimens were directly received by the Head of the Junior High School at Pondok Pesantren Al-Hikmah. Looking ahead, it is hoped that such activities can be conducted regularly and reach all classes, allowing students to experience real-life learning.
