Warkah, First Disabled Student in the Biology Program at UIN SUKA, Earns Bachelor’s Degree

Warkah Febrian Basrin, the first disabled student in the Biology program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, completed his undergraduate studies through Munaqosah on October 8, 2019. His research, titled “Biodiversity Study of Reptiles around Rivers, Rice Fields, and Samigaluh Forest in Kulon Progo,” was supervised by Ms. Siti Aisah, M.Si., and evaluated by Ms. Najda Rafqiyati, M.Si., and Mr. Ardyan Pramudya, M.Si. Before attending UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Warkah attended a Special School in Payakumbuh, his hometown.

Warkah’s academic journey was not without challenges. As a student from the 2013 cohort, he faced difficulties in communication with professors and peers, often feeling isolated and lacking confidence. Overcoming communication barriers and language issues in Bahasa Indonesia required extra effort from both Warkah and his instructors. The Disability Services Center (Pusat Layanan Difabel, PLD) provided volunteer companions to assist Warkah in class, although the interpreters were not from the Biology program, leading to occasional differences in perception.

Despite having to retake some courses and handle additional assignments, Warkah remained committed to the Biology program. He adapted to the environment, gradually building confidence and maintaining a positive attitude. A significant moment occurred during his internship at Gembira Loka Zoo, where Warkah performed well and adapted to working alongside zoo staff.

Choosing a zoology theme for his research due to his love for animals, Warkah’s thesis was guided by Ms. Aisah and Ms. Najda. His enthusiasm shone during the thesis proposal seminar, where he answered questions diligently, even when changing research locations. Throughout a year of research, Warkah effectively presented his findings, explaining various reptile species and their differences. His engaging self-made presentation made the Biology faculty proud and touched, recognizing Warkah’s ability to complete his bachelor’s degree successfully.

Warkah’s success is a testament to his determination, hard work, and the support he received from the Disability Services Center, professors, and fellow students. After graduation, he aspires to work in a zoo, continuing his passion for the animal world.
