NGOPI (Smart Biology Chat) #2

The Biology Program once again organized the NGOPI (Smart Biology Chat) activity for session 2. NGOPI is a regular event held by the program every month, allowing students and faculty to discuss research, teaching, community service, and current biological issues. For session 2, NGOPI was conducted virtually with the theme “Biogas for Energy Independence.” The guest speaker was Ms. Dwi Otik Kurniawati, M.Eng., a lecturer in Informatics Engineering at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. The event took place from 09:00 to 11:00. Moderating the session was Ms. Dian Aruni Kumalawati, M.Sc., a Biology lecturer at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta.

During this session, the guest speaker explained the utilization of biogas for energy independence. Biogas is produced through the anaerobic decomposition of organic materials by microorganisms. One potential source of biogas is animal waste, such as cow dung. Cow dung represents significant potential as an alternative energy source. Additionally, the waste generated during biogas production can be repurposed as fertilizer. Following the speaker’s explanation, the event continued with discussions and Q&A. Several questions were posed by active Biology students from UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, with approximately 65 participants.
