“Wild Animal Handling” Professionalism Training in Biology
The Biology program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta organized its 6th Professionalism Training, attended by both students and alumni. The event took place on August 1, 2021, with the theme “Wild Animal Handling (Reptilia)” presented by Hanif Kurniawan (known as Mas HanK). The training aimed to equip biology graduates with knowledge about handling wild animals, particularly reptiles, and efforts to conserve them.
The event began with the agenda read by Nur Fiddarayni, followed by the Indonesian national anthem and the UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta hymn. Dr. Najda Rifqiyati, M.Si., Head of the Biology Department, delivered a welcoming address.
The core of the training involved material presentations by guest speakers, moderated by Dr. Ardyan Pramudya, S.Si., M.Si., a faculty member in the Biology program. Mas HanK discussed handling techniques for wild animals, focusing on reptiles (snakes). The speakers covered topics such as identifying snake characteristics, venomous versus non-venomous species, different types of snakes, and their roles in ecosystems. The Wild Animal Handling training included video explanations by Mas HanK and his colleagues from Kampung Satwa. They demonstrated safe interactions with venomous snakes and discussed the risks associated with snakebites. The session concluded with a Q&A session with participants and ended at 11:30 AM local time, followed by awards for the most active participants during the training.
