Professionalism Training in Biology: Microgreens – Healthy and High-Quality Nutritional Source
The Biology program conducted the Professionalism Training for students on September 18, 2021, with the theme “Microgreens: Healthy and High-Quality Nutritional Source.” The guest speaker for this training was Ibu Atin Saraswati, an expert from PT. Indmira. The event commenced at 9:00 AM via Zoom. It began with the agenda read by Zidni Amaliyatul Hidayah, followed by the singing of the Indonesian national anthem and the UIN Sunan Kalijaga hymn. Ibu Siti Aisah, M.Si., the Secretary of the Biology program, delivered a welcoming speech, emphasizing the importance of absorbing knowledge from the guest speaker for both students and alumni.
The session continued with Ibu Atin’s presentation. She introduced the Hydroponic Farm at PT. Indmira, located in Dusun Purwodadi, Pakem Binangun, Sleman, and the Organic Precision Farming at PT. Indmira in Dusun Wonogiri, Pakem Binangun, Sleman. The speaker explained the types of crops grown, including leafy vegetables, horticulture, and herbs. She covered the cultivation stages, from site selection to harvesting, post-harvest handling, and marketing. Post-harvest stages ensure the quality of the harvested plants, involving sorting, grading by size and weight, washing, and packaging. PT. Indmira uses eco-packaging, although certain vegetables still require plastic for preservation.
Currently, PT. Indmira is developing Microgreen Amboja, where green leafy vegetables are harvested shortly after the cotyledon leaves develop (around 7-14 days after sowing). Microgreens are exceptionally small in size. Research shows that Microgreens have higher nutritional value than mature vegetables due to their rich content of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, beta-carotene, plant oils, and proteins. PT. Indmira cultivates microgreens such as Green Lettuce, Green Spinach, and Red Spinach. These tiny greens can be consumed directly after washing, without the need for cooking. They can also be mixed with other foods or beverages. Microgreens are a great solution to encourage children and young people to enjoy vegetables due to their sweet, mild, and fresh flavors.
