On Saturday, June 18, 2022, the Biology Study Program hosted the 2022 Professionalism Training in Biology. In its third episode, the program focused on the theme “Writing Cool Stuff for Mass Media,” featuring guest speaker Galih Adi Prasetyo, SE (a journalist from Jawa Pos). The event, conducted online, began at 9:00 AM and was opened by the MC. Following the opening, Dr. Najda Rifqiyati, M.Si., Head of the Biology Program at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, delivered a welcoming address. The main session featured Galih Adi Prasetyo’s presentation, moderated by Dr. Siti Fatimah, S.Kp.G., MPH. During the talk, the speaker discussed Jawa Pos’s background and its current daily concept. Additionally, he covered various types of news, including feature articles and investigative pieces. The session also explored community-contributed content such as short stories, poems, opinions (focused on individual responses to current issues), photos, and comic caricatures (an educational way to package information). To get published in mass media, understanding the medium, writing style, and topic selection is crucial. Avoid submitting the same article to multiple outlets, and consider each outlet’s capacity for accepting submissions. Choose timely and relevant themes. The event concluded with a discussion session among participants, wrapping up at 11:00 AM.
