Ecoenzyme and Composting Training at the Wimalandaru Karanggayam Waste Bank Community by UIN Jogja’s Biology Program
As part of realizing the Tridharma of Higher Education, the Biology Study Programengaged in community service (PkM) by conducting a simulated training on eco enzyme and compost production for the Wimalandaru Karanggayam Waste Bank community. This initiative aimed to promote waste management in the area. The event took place on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at the Karanggayam Sports Hall, starting at 1:00 PM. Approximately 60 Karanggayam residents participated, including representatives from neighborhood associations (RT), youth, waste bank managers, and technical implementation teams.
PSBiologi invited three speakers: Dr. Lela Susilawati, who shared her experiences from Japan regarding advanced waste management technologies—no wonder Japan ranks as one of the cleanest countries in Asia. The next speakers were Ms. Ika Nugraheni, M.Si., and Ms. Dias Idha Pramesti, M.Si. They explained the techniques for converting waste into eco enzyme and compost. Both methods are relatively straightforward, even for household-scale implementation.
The enthusiastic participation of community members was evident through their active engagement in asking questions and practical exercises. Ecoenzyme is produced using fresh fruit peels, which can be combined with additional aromas like mint leaves. During the training, the eco enzyme was made from orange peels mixed with water and molasses and then fermented for at least three months. It serves as an alternative floor cleaner and liquid fertilizer. Composting, on the other hand, involves utilizing easily decomposable organic waste, such as vegetable scraps, dry leaves, and paper. Adding a starter like EM4 and a sprinkle of water helps maintain the moisture level during the composting process.
This activity reflects PSBiologi’s commitment to supporting waste management efforts, particularly in the Karanggayam area and strengthening collaborative synergy between the local community and UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta, specifically the Biology Program.
