Islamic-Based Sexual Education in Village Development Activities

The Biological Sciences Student Association (HMPS) at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta organized a Village Development activity in the Al-Hikmah Islamic Boarding School area in Karangmojo, Gunung Kidul. The event took place from August 29, 2022, to September 1, 2022. Various programs were planned for this event, with faculty members from the Biology Department at UIN Sunan Kalijaga serving as speakers. One of the sessions held on Monday, August 29, 2022, focused on “Sexual Education for Adolescents” and was attended by all male students of the Al-Hikmah Islamic Boarding School. Desi Suantari, M.K.M., was the invited speaker.

Sexual education from an Islamic perspective aims to provide information to adolescents on how to fulfill their needs according to the laws established by Allah. It is essential to teach sexual education to adolescents within the framework of Islamic morality. This approach helps adolescents understand the boundaries set by Islamic law, distinguishing between what is permissible (halal) and what is forbidden (haram) in interactions with the opposite sex. By doing so, they can avoid being enslaved by their desires and falling into immoral behavior.

Islamic-based sexual education also serves the following purposes:

  • Living the Perfection of Islamic Teachings: It enables students to internalize Islamic teachings in addressing various human issues.
  • Instilling Belief and Faith: Students develop conviction and faith in the greatness and magnificence of Allah.
  • Providing Accurate and Clear Knowledge: The education ensures that students receive accurate and straightforward information.
  • Correcting Paradigms Regarding Interactions with the Opposite Sex: It helps shape attitudes and behaviors by Islamic principles.
  • Cultivating Noble Character and Conduct: The goal is to foster virtuous behavior.
  • Emphasizing the Importance of Building Harmonious Family Institutions: The focus is on creating families characterized by tranquility, love, and compassion.
  • Promoting a Harmonious Society within the Framework of Islamic Rules: The education contributes to a well-ordered society based on Islamic guidelines.

During this session, the male students learned about the scope of sexual education, physical and emotional changes during puberty, self-care from both medical and religious perspectives, Islamic rules regarding interactions with the opposite sex, and sexually transmitted diseases.

The collaboration between the Islamic boarding school and the Biology Department at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta reflects their joint effort to integrate scientific knowledge with Islamic principles
