Collaborative Supervision Between PSU Thailand and UIN Sunan Kalijaga Leads to the Successful Final Project Examination of Biology Student Fadilla Nur Rahma
On Thursday, May 1, 2025, Fadilla Nur Rahma, a student from the Biology Study Program, successfully completed her final project examination. Her thesis was co-supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pimonsri Mitraparp-Arthorn from the Microbiology Lab at the Faculty of Science, PSU Thailand, and Lela Susilawati, PhD, an internal supervisor from the Biology Study Program, Faculty of Science and Technology, UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta.
The examination was conducted online in accordance with UIN regulations, with two examiners involved: Prof. Pimonsri as the external examiner from PSU and Dr. Arifah Khusnuryani as the internal examiner from UIN Sunan Kalijaga. The examination process was carried out in a well-organized manner, following a designated schedule that included the student’s presentation, a question-and-answer session, and concluded with the announcement of the student's performance.
During Fadilla's examination, she was able to respond to the key questions raised by the examiners clearly and concisely. The feedback provided by both examiners was crucial for the improvement of the project manuscript. One important aspect that requires further analysis is the key compound in the BSFL extract, which demonstrates antibacterial activity against shrimp pathogens. A detailed examination of this compound will enable further studies to elucidate its mechanism and support molecular detection of its properties.
The title of Fadilla Nur Rahma's project is "Antimicrobial and Anti-Biofilm Activity of Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) Extract Compared to Commercial Lauric and Palmitic Acids Against Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio campbellii." This project was completed during Fadilla's internship in Prof. Pimonsri's laboratory at PSU. Throughout her one-semester research at PSU, Fadilla was intensively supervised by Prof. Pimonsri. She regularly reported her progress during meetings with Prof. Pimonsri and her lab students, receiving valuable feedback from both her supervisor and labmates. This invaluable experience allowed her to enhance her laboratory skills, from drafting to reporting, and significantly improved her overall lab experience.
The Biology Study Program remains committed to expanding collaborations in both academic and non-academic areas. This collaborative supervision offers several key advantages, including broadening access to diverse expertise outside of Biology Study Program and UIN, enriching student learning through cross-institutional perspectives, and fostering research collaborations that can lead to interdisciplinary research opportunities.
